CREATING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE OF MINING IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA
WHAT
The mining industry is one of the main pillars of economic growth in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The island nation is home to some of the biggest gold and copper reserves in the world. Large-scale mining has supported PNG’s development in the last 50 years but has faced environmental challenges and backlash from local communities.
Several national strategies on sustainability have been announced by the PNG government, including Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Program (PNGSDP), Responsible Sustainable Development Strategy (STARS) and Vision 2050. These government policies and programs aim to capitalize on the economic boom of the mining industry to drive domestic environmental sustainability and social responsibility, but they need partners to reach their goals.
