FOLU NET SINK 2030 INITIATIVE IN THE INDONESIAN FORESTRY SECTOR

WHAT

FOLU Net Sink 2030 is an Indonesian government target aimed at enabling greater greenhouse gas absorption in the country’s forestry sector than the quantity of gas emitted by the sector, by the year 2030. This ambitious target forms part of the government’s broader initiative to achieve national Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

The Indonesian government encourages the private sector to adopt more sustainable practices to support the achievement of the target, while maintaining or even increasing industry productivity. Sweden, as a country with strong forestry technology ecosystem, is a very suitable partner to help Indonesia in this area.  There are several opportunities associated with this government initiative that can be explored by Swedish advanced solution providers, as follows:

Digitalisation and mechanization solutions for forestry sector

Indonesian forestry sector has relatively low productivity compared to its peers. Digitalization and mechanization can help the industry to boost industry’s productivity and efficiency, while increasing sustainability in the operations at the same time. Swedish solutions such as forestry heavy equipment, chainsaws, and data management solutions can help these companies achieve their objectives.

Manufacturing solutions for pulp and paper industry

Indonesian pulp and paper industry is among the largest in the region, with global giants like APRIL and APP dominating the market. Both companies have extensive production capacity which drives the demand of various manufacturing and logistics solutions relevant to the needs of paper industry. Paper industry consumes a lot of energy and generates pollution and waste, so advanced technologies that can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions can be interesting for major players.

Fire prevention and management solutions for forest

Indonesia is frequently exposed to wildfires every year, which is a prominent source of emissions from the forestry sector. Wildfires also pose very significant economic impact for the industry. Swedish fire prevention solution can help these companies in managing this inherently high level of risk.

HOW

Business Sweden is organizing the following promotional activities for Swedish companies to address the business opportunities in the forestry sector:

  • Visit to Riau, the centre of pulp and paper industry in Indonesia, to meet two dominant players, i.e. APRIL and APP, learn best practices in the Indonesian forestry industry, and understand their industry needs.
  • Workshop on best practices in the forestry industry in order to provide the opportunities for Swedish solution providers to educate the market regarding the importance of using advanced solutions in the operations.
  • B2B meetings between Swedish technology providers and Indonesian forestry companies to allow the solution providers to introduce their products to the companies and obtain their product requirements and other feedback.
  • Government engagements to understand how the Indonesian government supports the industry in increasing the level of productivity and sustainability.
