India - Sweden collaboration for climate resilient and sustainable cities India-Sweden Smart Grids Cluster

What

India’s smart grid market is projected to grow rapidly from approximately USD 2.4 billion in 2025 to USD 19.3 billion by 2033, highlighting its pivotal role in the country’s energy transition. In contrast to Sweden’s mature, highly automated electricity grid, which serves around 5.5 million consumers, India operates at an extraordinary scale—with over 350 million electricity consumers, peak demand exceeding 250 GW, and more than 200 GW of renewable capacity already integrated into the system.

Reliable, resilient, and efficient smart grids will be central to India’s energy transition and industrial growth agenda. At this scale, solutions that deliver incremental efficiency improvements in Sweden can drive system-wide transformation and generate substantial value in India. Consequently, India’s expanding requirements are creating significant growth opportunities across distribution network digitalization, grid automation, data-driven loss reduction, and large-scale renewable integration.

How

Partake in Business Sweden’s India-Sweden Smart Grid Cluster with dedicated workshops and delegation planned in May 2026. The program is structured around three core thematic areas, each addressing a critical aspect of India's smart grid development.

Policy and Regulatory Enablement: This area will assist Swedish companies in understanding the appropriate framework for smart and flexible grids. It will also focus on understanding grid flexibility, storage participation, and identifying suitable areas for regulatory pilots and demonstrations.

Stakeholder Engagement: The second thematic area will involve direct interaction with DISCOM players in India to comprehend existing DISCOM challenges and implementation models.

Collaborative Ecosystem Expansion: The third thematic area will concentrate on integration, scaling, and ecosystem development, exploring partnerships with Indian EPC players and system integrators as local partners.
