Opportunities in battery and ESS in South Korea
What
South Korea, led by LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On, possesses world-class battery manufacturing capabilities and a strong ecosystem spanning the entire battery value chain. However, the industry is now facing new challenges that go beyond manufacturing efficiency - most notably supply-chain transparency and recycling. To comply with the EU Battery Regulation, there is an urgent need to implement carbon footprint tracking and battery passport systems. At the same time, Korea is pursuing a diversification strategy to overcome the electric vehicle market slowdown (the EV “chasm”), including expanding into the energy storage system (ESS) sector, advancing next-generation technologies such as solid-state batteries, and scaling up LFP battery production to compete in cost-sensitive market segments. In parallel, the battery recycling industry, including the recovery of critical and rare metals from end-of-life batteries, has been elevated to a national strategic industry, reinforcing Korea’s transition toward a more sustainable and resilient battery ecosystem.
How
- InterBattery 2026: Business Sweden is organizing a delegation to InterBattery 2026, taking place from March 11–13 in Seoul. As Asia’s leading annual battery industry exhibition, the event highlights the latest innovations across the entire battery ecosystem —including EV batteries, ESS, materials, components, manufacturing, and recycling—while bringing together industry professionals and experts from around the world.
- Swedish companies can leverage South Korea’s dynamic battery ecosystem as a springboard to generate tangible business results by strengthening partnerships with key players in Korea.
