Opportunities in Korea’s Space and Defence sector

What

South Korea is steadily increasing investment in defence as security risks in the region grow. Defence spending reached around USD 47.6 billion in 2024 and is expected to continue rising, with a focus on advanced weapon systems, defence R&D, and strengthening indigenous capabilities.

At the same time, space has become a national priority. The government is expanding programs across satellites, launch capabilities, space surveillance, and space-based services. Space and defence are no longer treated as separate areas; instead, they are increasingly linked through dual-use technologies such as AI, sensors, secure communications, autonomy, and cyber capabilities.

Korea is also moving ahead with the development of space and aerospace clusters. These clusters bring together companies, research institutes, universities, and public agencies, creating an environment where R&D, testing, manufacturing, and commercialization can happen in close proximity. This is driving growing interest in cooperation with international technology partners.

How

Swedish companies can engage as suppliers of key technologies, subsystems, and solutions within Korea’s space and defence ecosystem, supporting programs related to satellites, launch systems, space services, defence platforms, and critical infrastructure. As Korea increases investment in these areas, demand is growing for reliable, high-performance technologies where Swedish companies have clear strengths.

Korea’s advantages lie in large-scale manufacturing, system integration, and fast project execution, while Sweden brings deep expertise in areas such as space systems, propulsion, sensors, autonomy, secure communications, and other dual-use technologies. This makes the two ecosystems highly complementary rather than competitive.

Swedish testbeds and R&D environments can be used for joint testing, proof-of-concept projects, and co-development, helping Korean stakeholders reduce technical risk and shorten development timelines.
