Vietnam going full Universal healthcare: what it means for Swedish companies

WHAT

From 2026, 100% of the Vietnamese population will be eligible for free annual health check-up.

HOW

Local healthcare facilities will play the role of primary healthcare and carry out routine health check-ups for the people. Right from the grassroots level, health check-ups will be conducted to create electronic health records, which will then be used for monitoring people's health throughout their lives.

To improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, the Ministry of Health will invest comprehensively in human resources, facilities, and equipment for grassroots healthcare.

Simultaneously, the Ministry will implement breakthrough solutions regarding human resources, prioritising the allocation, mobilisation, and creation of superior mechanisms and policies, especially in remote areas, border regions, and islands.

Swedish industry and organisations can contribute to the development and enhancement of the healthcare system in Vietnam by acting as a gateway to the Swedish healthcare model through high-quality medical technologies, services, capacity building as well as access to the financing tool through EKN/SEK.

To facilitate this bilateral cooperation, Business Sweden has established the Sweden-Vietnam Health Innovation Initiative, which is a platform for bilateral dialogues and has been endorsed by the Ministry of Health of Vietnam via several dialogues since 2024. Driven by Team Sweden and industry partners, the Initiative focuses on:

  • Capacity building and upskilling programs in several therapy areas.
  • Supporting Vietnamese government with healthcare digitalization effort, via the concrete support for the pilot Bac Ninh Smart Healthcare City.
  • Contributing to the development and enhancement of the healthcare infrastructure in the country.
  • Exploring and facilitating commercial opportunities for Swedish companies in the healthcare sector in Vietnam.
