Accelerating Industrial Decarbonisation through India-Sweden Sustainability Partnership (ISGTP 2.0)

WHAT

IIndia is the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China and the United States, accounting for ~7–8% of global CO₂ emissions, while Asia contributes over 50%. India’s emissions have doubled over the past two decades, largely driven by rapid industrialisation and urbanisation. Manufacturing sector contributes ~17–18% of India’s GDP, while steel, cement, chemicals, and fertilizers driving bulk of industrial emissions.

The Government of India has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, later than the EU’s 2050 target however aligned with other large emerging economies. Near-term targets include 50% non-fossil power capacity and a 45% reduction in GDP emissions intensity by 2030 (vs. 2005). Achieving these goals requires structural transformation of production processes, energy systems, and value chains.

Industrial decarbonisation is emerging as one of the world’s largest growth opportunities, projected to attract USD 1–1.5 trillion in cumulative investments by 2030–2040, with demand for sustainability solutions growing 12–15% annually. Hard-to-abate sectors are expected to drive over 40% of investment demand. Domestic policies such as the Indian Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) and international mechanisms like the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) are increasingly shaping efficiency standards and export dynamics.

Leading Indian companies are targeting net-zero or carbon-neutral goals by 2040–2050, aligning with European corporate timelines and are seeking international partnerships to scale solutions in green hydrogen, fossil-free processes, CCUS, energy efficiency, digital optimisation, and circular manufacturing. India’s industrial decarbonisation offers a major opportunity for Sweden–India collaboration, combining sustainability with economic and technological growth.
