The Future of Mobility in South Korea: From V2X/V2G and SDVs to Robotics

WHAT
  • V2G/V2X: South Korea entered the commercialization phase of V2G in 2026, enabling electric vehicles to function as mobile energy storage systems. Through the Special Act on the Promotion of Distributed Energy, the government has established a market framework that allows electricity stored in EV batteries to be fed back into the power grid, creating new revenue opportunities. At the same time, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) has completed a nationwide project to deploy C-V2X infrastructure along major arterial roads. This has laid the foundation for a connected mobility environment in which vehicles can exchange real-time data with traffic signals, pedestrians, and other vehicles.
  • Autonomous Driving & SDV: South Korea : has been advancing full-scale commercialization projects for Level 4 autonomous vehicles starting in 2026. Led by Hyundai Motor Group, the industry is accelerating the transition to SDVs by decoupling vehicle hardware and software and continuously enhancing performance through OTA updates. To support this shift, the government is expanding autonomous driving pilot zones nationwide and actively backing public-sector projects that deploy autonomous shuttles and unmanned logistics trucks on public roads. These initiatives are positioning Korea as a real-world testbed for autonomous mobility, while strengthening its competitiveness in SDV platforms, vehicle operating systems, and AI-based driving intelligence.
  • AI Robot: Following a legal revision that allows robots to operate on outdoor sidewalks, South Korea has seen the rapid normalization of last-mile robot delivery projects, in which AI-powered delivery robots transport goods in urban areas. In parallel, to address labor shortages, AI-based collaborative robots and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are being widely deployed not only in large logistics centers but also across small and medium-sized manufacturing sites.

HOW
  • The ITS World Congress in South Korea: The world’s largest event for Intelligent Transport Systems and often referred to as the “Transport Olympics,” will take place in Gangneung from October 19 to 23, 2026. The congress will feature a diverse program with a strong emphasis on Autonomous Driving, Connected Vehicles, Mobility on Demand (MOD), Mobility as a Service (MaaS), Smart Cities, Smart Infrastructure, Traffic Management, Urban Planning, V2X, V2V, and Intermodal Systems.
  • Swedish companies can leverage South Korea’s dynamic mobility ecosystem as a springboard to generate tangible business results by strengthening partnerships with key OEMs and policy makers in Korea.
