Modernize Mining in India
What
India’s mining sector is undergoing a major transformation, driven by modernization and sustainability-focused investments as leading companies commit billions to shift from a traditional, underexplored industry to a technology-enabled one. Despite being rich in minerals, only 10% of India’s Obvious Geological Potential (OGP) has been explored and just 1.5% mined, highlighting significant untapped potential compared to mature markets in Europe and Australia, this positions India as one of the largest underexplored mining frontiers globally. The government is actively enabling private participation and improving productivity and sustainability standards, signalling a structural shift toward global best practices.
India’s mining and metals sector is entering a transformative phase, driven by large-scale investments in electrification, automation, digitalization, and sustainability. Companies such as Hindustan Zinc (Vedanta), Vedanta Limited, Hindalco Industries (Aditya Birla), Tata Steel, GMDC, and NMDC are collectively deploying billions of dollars to replace diesel fleets with battery-electric equipment, implement smart mine platforms, predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring, and ESG-aligned initiatives.
In addition, a USD 4.1 billion national program aims to make India self-reliant in critical minerals, with exploration licenses and seven new blocks opening the door to private sector participation in lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earths. Together, these developments create a multi-billion-dollar opportunity for global technology providers to deliver integrated solutions in mine electrification, digital control systems, and sustainable operations.
With strong policy support, rising capital flows, and concentrated modernization programs, India offers a compelling entry point for partners to help shape the future of safe, green, and efficient mining at scale.
How
