Construction of North-South high-speed railway connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

 The North-South high-speed railway is a major infrastructure project in Vietnam aiming to connect Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with a modern railway system boasting speeds of up to 350 km/h, passing through 23 passenger stations and 5 freight stations.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered the Ministry of Construction to expedite procedures to commence construction of the North-South high-speed railway project by the end of 2026.

The railway, one of Vietnam’s most ambitious transportation projects this decade, was approved for investment by the National Assembly in November 2024 with a preliminary budget of approximately 643 billion SEK (US$67 billion), passing through 20 localities, include 23 passenger and 5 freight stations.

To ensure Swedish timely and consistent participation in this project, Sweden-Vietnam Railway Development Working Group was established in 2025 and continues to act as a framework for a bilateral collaboration, driven by Team Sweden and industry partners and focused on:

  • Gathering Swedish expertise in railway development to assist Vietnam in this journey.
  • Creating and executing a structural approach for Team Sweden and Swedish companies to pitch credit finance offers and technologies to project investors, PMC consortium and EPCs who are the key decision influencers and makers.
  • Supporting Swedish members in the bidding process.
  • Promoting Swedish expertise in transportation, and Vietnam as a destination for opportunities in sustainable railway and mobility infrastructure development.
