Strengthening cooperation in a strategic sector

Business Sweden hosted a high-level roundtable in Stockholm in connection with the visit. The event brought together representatives from JAXA, the Swedish National Space Agency (SNSA), SSC, the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF), ECAPS, Unibap and other stakeholders from the Swedish space ecosystem.

The discussions covered a range of topics, including satellite systems, propulsion technologies, Earth observation, research collaboration, innovation and commercial partnerships. Participants also explored how closer cooperation could support future technological development and industrial competitiveness in both countries.

Opportunities for Swedish companies

The dialogue reinforced a shared commitment to strengthening Sweden-Japan cooperation and identifying concrete opportunities for business collaboration.

Several Swedish areas of expertise were highlighted as particularly relevant to the Japanese market. These include satellite launch capabilities, space-to-earth connectivity solutions, propulsion technologies, AI-related applications and precision engineering.

As Japan's national space agency, JAXA plays a central role in the country's space programme and is also a significant purchaser of technologies and services. This creates potential opportunities for Swedish companies across exports, industrial partnerships, research collaboration and joint innovation initiatives.

Building long-term relationships through the Sweden-Japan Space Alliance

The discussions form part of the ongoing Sweden-Japan Space Alliance, an initiative designed to strengthen cooperation between industry, academia, government agencies and space organisations in the two countries.

The alliance aims to connect stakeholders, facilitate dialogue and help create pathways to concrete business opportunities. Participants also highlighted the growing importance of dual-use technologies and the value of maintaining a long-term perspective as the global space sector continues to evolve.

“
Japan is one of the world's most advanced and dynamic space markets, and we see significant opportunities to deepen collaboration between our two countries. By connecting Swedish and Japanese companies, research organisations and space institutions, we can create new pathways for innovation, business growth and technological development that strengthen both ecosystems for the future.
